Kern Medical Center Employees Brace for Layoffs

Facing multimillion-dollar losses each month, Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield, Calif., is preparing to lay off an unconfirmed number of employees, according to a report by The Bakersfield Californian.

The hospital lost $3.4 million in February and is on its way to a $30 million loss for its fiscal year, which ends in June, according to the report.

Kern County owns Kern Medical Center. According to the report, all of the county's departments are being asked to make spending cuts. "It's a real likelihood that [layoffs] are coming. It is safe to assume that some or many of those will be at KMC," Leticia Perez, Kern County supervisor chair, told The Bakersfield Californian.

The hospital has already cut 60 full-time equivalent positions through attrition and hour reductions, according to the report.

The hospital employs about 1,800, according to its website.
