Kaiser to Lay Off 101 in Hawaii

Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente has issued layoff notices to 101 employees of Kaiser Permanente Hawaii, which operates one hospital and 20 clinics on three Hawaiian islands, according to a KHON report.

The affected employees include 66 security guards and 16 patient transporters, among other positions.

The layoffs are part of a restructuring to make operational improvements, according to the report. "Changes currently in process include consolidating some job functions in patient transport and other areas as well as exploring changing the way we staff security at our facilities by considering contracting these services through a professional security firm," a Kaiser statement said, according to KHON.

The system has about 200 open positions and has met with affected staff to "explore their options" of staying with Kaiser, according to the report.

KP Hawaii employs 4,400 people.
