Hospital CEO Turnover Hits Record High

Hospital CEO turnover grew to 20 percent in 2013, the highest rate recorded since the American College of Healthcare Executives began tracking turnover in 1981, according to an ACHE news release.

The annual turnover rate has fluctuated between 14 percent and 18 percent in the decade prior to 2013, hitting 17 percent in 2012 and 16 percent in 2011.

"The increase in the turnover rate may be indicative of a combination of factors, including an increased number of baby boomers seeking retirement, the emerging trend toward consolidation in our industry and the complexity and amount of change going on in healthcare today," Deborah J. Bowen, FACHE, CAE, president and CEO of ACHE, said in the release. "The increase in the rate reinforces the need for healthcare leaders to work with their boards to ensure appropriate succession plans are in place."

Alaska had the highest adjusted CEO turnover rate at 37 percent, with Oklahoma (33 percent) and Arkansas (30 percent) following. Vermont and Rhode Island each had 0 percent turnover, while New Jersey and West Virginia were second-lowest at 10 percent.
