Nurses at Redding, Calif.-based Shasta Regional Medical Center voted 241 to 27 in favor of unionization.
With the vote, 350 nurses as Shasta Regional, part of the Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare hospital system, will join the California Nurses Association /National Nurses United, according to the union.
CNA said in a news release nurses want "safe staffing, a secure retirement and promoting RN retention," as well as "to assure adequate equipment and supplies, increased support staff, and elevating other standards."
Hospital officials expressed disappointment in the vote, but said in an emailed statement to Becker's Hospital Review it "would like to recognize our employees for the respect they show for their coworkers, regardless of differences of opinion."
Shasta Regional added it aims "to move forward together as a united team" and is "committed to bargaining in good faith with CNA leadership, to reach an agreement in the best interests of our hospital and our nurses."
CNA and NNU also represent workers at other Prime hospitals, including Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nev., Alvarado Hospital Medical Center in San Diego, and Centinela Hospital Medical Center in Inglewood, Calif.
