3 things to know about nursing demand by state

Digital Third Coast, a Chicago-based internet marketing service, recently worked with the nursing program at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill., to research state-by-state nursing demand in the U.S.

For the study, researchers examined job listing data from Indeed.com to calculate the active job listings per state per 10,000 people.

Here are three study findings.

1. Demand for nurses is highest in New Mexico, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and North Dakota. New Mexico had 20.9 active job listings per 10,000 people, while Massachusetts, New Hampshire and North Dakota had 22.9, 20.6 and 21, respectively.

2. Nursing demand is lowest in Utah, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Utah had 9.1 active job listings per 10,000 people, while Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama had 9.5, 7.2 and 9.8, respectively.

3. Researchers identified several factors that influence nursing demand, including local and state budgets for schools and hospitals, healthcare services and the amount of facilities in each state as well earnings potential.
