Hackensack University Medical Center to Apply to Reopen Pascack Valley Hospital

Hackensack (N.J.) University Medical Center will submit an application on June 1 to open a 128-bed hospital in Westwood, N.J., according to a Record report.

An appellate court decision has allowed Hackensack to apply to reopen the former Pascack Valley Hospital in Westwood, which Hackensack bought at bankruptcy more than three years ago. Hackensack plans to operate the new hospital as a joint venture with a for-profit partner.

By Nov. 3, the State Health Planning Board will review the application and recommend an action to the state health commissioner, who will approve or reject it.

The court denied motions by The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, N.J., and Englewood (N.J.) Hospital and Medical Center to appeal the state's call for applications for a new hospital. Valley and EHMC argue that the call for applications was designed to allow only Hackensack to apply and that a need for a new hospital has not been proven.

Bergen County, N.J., residents have called for Pascack Valley Hospital's reopening because of the time and distance needed to reach other hospitals.
