Trump to name Dr. Norman Sharpless director of National Cancer Institute

President Donald Trump said he intends to appoint Norman Sharpless, MD, director of the National Cancer Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health.

Here are four things to know about Dr. Sharpless.

1. Dr. Sharpless serves as the director of the University of North Carolina Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center at Chapel Hill. He has held the position since 2014.

2. He would succeed Douglas Lowy, MD, who has served as director of the NCI since April 2015.

3. He began his faculty appointment at UNC Lineberger in 2002.

4. Dr. Sharpless received his undergraduate degree in mathematics from UNC-Chapel Hill and earned his medical degree from the UNC School of Medicine.
