Low inpatient volumes push Lehigh Valley Hospital-Pocono to cut staff

Allentown, Pa.-based Lehigh Valley Health Network will make staffing adjustments at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Pocono in East Stroudsburg, Pa., reports The Express-Times.

The staffing adjustments, which will result in the displacement of some employees, are being made as a result of declining inpatient volumes, LVHN said.

"The combination of the changes in the competitive healthcare landscape in Monroe County and the ongoing trend of cases shifting from inpatient to outpatient care has impacted our organization since the start of the fiscal year in July," LVHN told Becker's via email. "We are making adjustments beginning today in our managerial, clinical and non-clinical staffing."

LVHN has not yet specified how many jobs will be cut. However, network spokesperson Brian Downs told The Express-Times LVHN will support displaced colleagues in seeking new available positions inside and outside the network.

In addition to staffing adjustments, LVHN is also pursuing non-labor cost reductions "that help us continue to provide full-service care to the community," the network said in its statement to Becker's.

"These steps, while difficult, position us to continue many services already provided in Monroe County including the ER, trauma, obstetrics, surgery, behavioral health, stroke and neurology, cardiology and heart surgery and orthopedics.  This action also gives us the financial strength to offer safe, high-quality care in the most accessible and convenient setting for our patients," LVHN added.

East Stroudsburg-based Pocono Health System became part of Lehigh Valley Health Network effective Jan. 1, with a leadership change marking the transition.
