Hartford HealthCare to cut 335 full-time jobs

Hartford (Conn.) HealthCare is eliminating the equivalent of about 335 full-time jobs, which will affect 418 staff members throughout the system, according to WTNH.

The 418 affected staff members include 105 workers in Hartford HealthCare's eastern Connecticut hospitals, 71 workers in its central Connecticut hospitals, 68 workers at Hartford (Conn.) Hospital, and 174 workers in other facilities.

Hartford HealthCare officials attribute the layoffs to cuts in reimbursements.

"Despite our best efforts to reduce costs and increase revenues this year, Hartford HealthCare faces additional Medicaid cuts, bringing our total Medicaid payment reductions from the state of Connecticut to more than $100 million over five years," Jeffrey A. Flaks, executive vice president and COO of Hartford HealthCare, wrote in a letter to all staff on Wednesday, according to WVIT. "The magnitude of these cuts makes our model unsustainable going forward."

Aside from the layoffs, Hartford HealthCare said they also are looking into reducing and consolidating some programs and services to create more efficiencies and save money, according to WTNH. The system is still working out specific details, the report notes.
