America needs to embrace global health leadership, says physician Congressman

One of the greatest impressions the United States has made on global affairs is its support of global health initiatives combating diseases such as HIV and malaria, and it is vital the U.S. continues to act as a leader in this field under President Donald Trump, according to an op-ed  in The Hill by U.S. Rep. Ami Bera, MD, D-Calif.

Dr. Bera argues that American investments in global health have resulted in numerous improvements, such as a 43 percent drop in maternal death across the world since 1990, that would not have been possible without U.S. aid and leadership. However, the State Department's April announcement that it will cut $69 million in funding to the United Nations Population Fund puts the lives of millions in jeopardy.

Dr. Bera urged his fellow legislators to vote in the coming weeks in support of global health funding to organizations like the UNPF, because the U.S. has a responsibility to embrace its role as a global health leader and owes it to the millions of people around the world who rely on its aid.
