8 latest hospital, health system layoffs

The following hospitals and health systems have shared plans for or implemented layoffs in June so far, starting with the most recent.

1. Porter Regional Hospital in Valparaiso, Ind., has eliminated about 70 jobs to consolidate job responsibilities and adjust to increased efficiency created by technology. Here are three things to know about the layoffs.

2. Chesterfield, Mo.-based Mercy Health, the fifth largest Catholic healthcare system in the U.S., announced plans to eliminate as many as 350 positions.

3. Hartford (Conn.) HealthCare is eliminating the equivalent of about 335 full-time jobs, which will affect 418 staff members throughout the system.

4. Escondido, Calif.-based Palomar Health plans to close its downtown Escondido campus. The final decision on closing the hospital will be made June 24, when the Palomar Health board of directors votes on the issue. If the board votes to close the hospital, between 60 and 75 full-time employees and an additional 180 to 220 per diem workers will lose their jobs.

5. Kona Community Hospital in Kealakekua, Hawaii, will eliminate 34 long-term care positions and close its 18-bed skilled nursing service. Here are five things to know about the closure and layoffs.

6. Springfield, Mass.-based Baystate Health will lay off 24 employees, cut hours for another 17 workers and not fill 45 open positions. Here are six things to know about the workforce changes.

7. Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, Calif., part of Renton, Wash.-based Providence Health & Services, shut down its regional blood donor center in May. Thirty-four employees were laid off as a result of the closure. Here are three things to know about the closure.

8. Mohawk Valley Health System in New Hartford, N.Y., is cutting 48 positions and making service changes at St. Elizabeth Medical Center and Faxton St. Luke's Healthcare, both in Utica, N.Y.
