10 hospital & health system CEOs with 2017 retirement plans

These 10 hospital CEOs are relinquishing their posts in 2017 after years at the helm.

1. Rex Conger will retire from his post as president and CEO of Perry Memorial Hospital in Princeton, Ill., on Jan. 15, 2017. Mr. Conger has served as president and CEO for more than nine years. Annette Schnabel, PMH's current COO, will take over in January.

2. Michael Connelly, current president and CEO of Cincinnati-based Mercy Health, plans to retire on Jan. 31, 2017. Mr. Connelly became CEO in 1995. John Starcher will serve as the organization's new president and CEO.

3. Philip Gustafson, current president and CEO of Mt. Vernon-based SSM Health of Southern Illinois, plans to retire on Feb. 3, 2017. Mr. Gustafson has been at the helm since 2008.

4. Thomas Hall, the current CEO of Lewisville, Texas-based Adeptus Health will retire in 2017. Mr. Hall took over as CEO in 2012, and will stay on as CEO and chairman of the board through mid-2017.

5. Mark J. Mundy, will retire from his post as CEO of New York City-based New York Methodist Hospital.

6. Gary Passama, Fairfield, Calif.-based NorthBay Healthcare's current CEO, plans to retire from the independent nonprofit health system in March 2017. He has served as the health system's CEO for 35 years.

7. Kevin Schoeplein, who has been the CEO of Peoria, Ill.-based OSF Healthcare since 2011, announced his retirement set for the end of 2017. OSF Healthcare plans to appoint Bob Sehring COO in January 2017 and then CEO once Mr. Schoeplein retires.

8. William P. Thompson, who serves as president and CEO of St. Louis-based SSM Health, plans to retire in 2017. He has been with the hospital for more than 36 years, and at the helm since 2011.

9. Gary Ulicny, PhD, will retire from his role as president and CEO of Shepherd Center in Atlanta on March 31, 2017, ending his 22-year run. Sarah Morrison, MBA, will take over as CEO of the 152-bed, private non-profit spinal cord and brain injury rehabilitation hospital beginning April 1, 2017.

10. Michael D. Williams, who has headed Community Hospital Corp., in Plano, Texas, for 20 years as president and CEO, is set to retire. Mr. Williams became the hospital's founding CEO in 1996. The hospital plans to fill the role by the end of June 2017.
