Sharp HealthCare reports theft of 757 patients' information

San Diego-based Sharp HealthCare reported 757 health screening records have been stolen from a locked cabinet in the San Diego-based Sharp Memorial Outpatient Pavilion, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.

After an investigation, Sharp determined a computer and external memory device were stolen from the pavilion. The device contained patient records gathered during screenings for blood pressure and/or cardiac health studies. Sharp HealthCare discovered the theft on Feb. 6.

The records may have included patients' names, ages, dates of birth, family history, current medications and each patient's screening type. Patients' Social Security numbers and financial information were not part of the breach, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.

Sharp HealthCare has informed impacted patients of the incident. Sharp has also reported the incident to HHS' Office for Civil Rights and the California Department of Public Health.

Sharp and the San Diego Police Department are investigating the incident, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.

In a statement sent to Becker's Hospital Review, Sharp HealthCare said, "Sharp apologizes for any inconvenience this situation may cause our patients, and we are conducting a review of our security practices and moving forward with additional safeguards to prevent this incident from occurring again."
