ONC Issues Grants to 2 HIE Governance Organizations to Promote Interoperability

The Office of the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology announced that it has awarded cooperative agreements to two health information exchange governance organizations — DirectTrust and EHR|HIE Interoperability Workgroup, led by the New York eHealth Collaborative.

The ONC will work closely with these entities to overcome interoperability challenges, reduce implementation costs and assure the privacy and security of health information exchange.

According to an InformationWeek report, the ONC is giving $285,000 to DirectTrust, a trade association that is creating a security and trust framework for directed exchanges of information.

It is also giving the EHR|HIE Interoperability Workgroup $205,000. The workgroup is developing plug-and-play interoperability for both directed and query-based exchange.

The agreements are the first two to be struck under the ONC's Exemplar HIE Governance Program announced in December 2012, according to the report.
