Mobile health app revenue expected to grow through 2020: 4 things to know

The revenue from mobile health apps is expected to grow through 2020; however, the industry hasn't proven lucrative for app publishers in recent years, according to a research2guidance report.

Here's what you need to know:

1. The market has changed in the past year; publishers of mobile health apps are increasingly connecting their products to third-party apps, sensors or data aggregators.

2. The revenue from mobile health apps and related services is expected to reach $31 billion by 2020, growing at a CAGR of 15 percent.

3. However, 78 percent of mobile health app publishers report making less than $100,000 from their entire portfolio; 60 percent of publishers make less than $10,000 per year.

4. The main income source for mobile health app publishers comes from licensing their technology and offering third party development services — not from traditional app store revenue.
