LG Health integrates PCA infusion pump with Epic EHR

Lancaster (Pa.) General Health integrated its Epic EHR system with its patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) pump.

Hospira's LifeCare PCA 7.0 infusion system and Epic Systems powered the integration.

PCA pumps, which are frequently used after surgeries, allow patients to self-administer pain medication. Released in May 2016, Hospira LifeCare PCA 7.0 is the first PCA pump to have EHR integration capabilities.

Through the integration, physicians will be able to program medication orders into Hospira LifeCare PCA 7.0 directly from the Epic EHR.

"This innovative technology will enhance patient safety, efficiently document patient data and provide nursing staff more time to focus on the needs of hospital patients receiving PCA therapy," said LG Health President and CEO Jan Bergen. "After extensive testing, we are proud to be the first health system to successfully integrate PCA pumps with our EMR, as we recognize the benefits it brings to our patients and clinicians."
