Horizon BCBSNJ discovers potential healthcare fraud using member IDs

Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey is notifying members their personal information may have been accessed and used in an insurance fraud scheme.

The payer's Special Investigations Unit learned July 30 several perpetrators obtained member identification numbers "through methods typically only available to legitimate doctors and healthcare professionals," according to a notice on the payer's website.

The perpetrators used those ID numbers to be reimbursed for medical services that were never provided.

A NJ.com report indicates approximately 1,100 individuals are affected by the breach.

Other potentially compromised information includes names, birth dates and gender. Horizon BCBSNJ reports no Social Security numbers, financial information or medical information was accessed or disclosed.

The payer indicates no reason to believe the personal information accessed was used outside of submitting false claims, and the information accessed could only be used to submit claims to Horizon BCBSNJ.
