Health IT will flourish under Trump administration, says Venrock survey

The number of new health IT companies will increase under the Trump administration, according to a Venrock report.

In March 2017, Venrock surveyed 274 representatives from healthcare startups, payers and providers, among other sectors, about the future of the industry.

Here are four survey findings.

1. When asked which healthcare subsectors will face challenges under the new administration, 66 percent of respondents said ACOs and 62 percent said payers. Only 12 percent said telemedicine and 10 percent said wearables and consumer sensors.

2. Sixty percent of respondents said they expect the number of new health IT companies to increase over the next two years, and 45 percent said the data analytics subsector will experience rapid growth in the next year.

3. However, 78 percent of respondents also expect established EMR giants like Epic and Cerner to ramp up their mergers and acquisitions as a way to target new revenue streams.

4. The two biggest challenges to health IT innovation in the next year will be regulatory changes and economic uncertainty, according to 35 percent and 34 percent of respondents, respectively.
