Family Medicine for America's Health lays out 10-year vision for health IT

The health IT landscape needs a "redesign," according to an Annals of Family Medicine article by Family Medicine for America's Health, a collaboration of eight U.S. family medicine societies.

In the article, the organization laid out a 10-year timeline to improve health IT, which its members have said is a driving force behind physician burnout.

"In 10 years, we will have a sustainable healthcare system that plays a central role in improving the health of the U.S. population," Family Medicine for America's Health wrote in the article. "The health IT in use does not support this vision."

The first steps in its timeline, which the organization said should be a national priority, include data visualization technologies and solutions that integrate sources of patient-generated health data. The organization's final overarching vision is technology that supports primary care physicians while enabling patients to control their healthcare.
