Cerner's new Trails Campus brings buying power to South Kansas City

When approximately 3,500 Cerner employees move to the company's new Trails Campus next year, they will bring with them a new buying power that could help revitalize the South Kansas City, Mo., neighborhood, reports The Kansas City Star.

The South Kansas City Alliance conducted a survey among Cerner employees to see what they would like to see in the new campus neighborhood. More than 600 employees responded. While many employees indicated wanting access to groceries, gasoline and restaurants in the new neighborhood, fewer said they would move to be closer to their jobs.

"We hope to attract people who want to invest in our community," Stacey Johnson-Cosby, an organizer of the survey, told The Kansas City Star, and Cerner employees may be the ones to do so. The average salary for a Cerner employee is $97,156, while the median income in the surrounding community is $43,559, according to the report.

Additionally, two-thirds of Cerner employees reported being 35 years old or younger, while currently just one-fifth of the South Kansas City population is between 20 and 34 years old. If employees do move to this neighborhood, it presents an opportunity for builders to cater to the desires of this demographic, which includes homes that are no more than 10 years old and single family homes, according to the report.
