Accenture: How tech can close the gender pay gap 35% by 2030

A new report from Accenture outlined three tools to help the gender pay gap decrease 35 percent by 2030.

As part of the report, titled Getting to Equal 2017, Accenture researchers interviewed more than 28,000 women and men of three generations in 29 countries. The survey respondents served in various workforce levels at companies of different sizes.

As part of the company's research, Accenture found the following:

  • Across the globe, a woman earns an average of $100 for every $140 a man earns.
  • Compared to men, women are less likely to have paid work (50 percent compared to 76 percent), and more likely to participate in unpaid work like cooking and cleaning. Due to this hidden pay gap, Accenture found for every $100 earned by a woman, a man earns $258.
  • Undergraduate women are less likely than undergraduate men to take computing classes in college (68 percent compared to 83 percent).

Based on these findings, Accenture unveiled three ways technology can act as an equalizer to close the gender pay gap and boost women's income by $3.9 trillion by 2030.

1. Digital fluency, the "extent to which people use digital technologies to connect, learn and work"

2. Career strategy, the "need for women to aim high, make informed choices and manage their careers proactively"

3. Tech immersion, "the opportunity to acquire greater technology and stronger digital skills to advance as quickly as men"
