RCM tip of the day: Increase patient payment options

As consumers take on more responsibility for their healthcare costs, they are increasingly demanding convenience and transparency in the billing process.

Chris Klitgaard, CEO of RCM services provider MediRevv: Patients are paying out-of-pocket more than ever before, which is why they are keenly interested in when and how they pay. As patients become more technology-savvy, some healthcare institutions struggle to keep up. More than 75 percent of consumers choose to pay their household bills through online payment channels, yet 87 percent of consumers report getting healthcare bills in the mail.

A healthcare organization's ability to collect patient revenue is influenced by how easy it is for patients to understand the bill, ask questions, and ultimately pay. A well-designed paper or electronic statement, a simple-to-use online payment portal, a mobile payment app and an inbound payment interactive voice response system each offer convenience to the patient, and may speed payment for healthcare providers.
