Prime hospital to become nonprofit: 3 things to know

Glendora (Calif.) Community Hospital is becoming a nonprofit facility, as Ontario, Calif.-based Prime Healthcare Services has donated the 128-bed hospital to the Prime Healthcare Foundation, a nonprofit public charity.

Here are three things to know about the donation.

1. Prem Reddy, MD, chairman, president and CEO of Prime Healthcare Services and founder of Prime Healthcare Foundation, said in a news release the decision to convert Glendora Community Hospital to a nonprofit hospital was based on "our desire to better serve the residents who rely on the hospital for quality healthcare."

2. With the donation, the Prime Healthcare Foundation owns and operates eight hospitals in California and Texas, including Glendora Community Hospital. All of the hospitals were all donated to the foundation free of debt.

3. Aside from the donation of Glendora Community Hospital, Prime Healthcare Foundation is also supporting a new nonprofit medical school, the California University of Science and Medicine, based in Colton, Calif.
