Pennsylvania Legislature takes aim at balance billing

Pennsylvania lawmakers crafted two bills with bipartisan support that would protect patients from surprise out-of-network medical bills, according to PennLive.

Both bills would shield patients from medical bills for both emergency and nonemergency care provided in situations where the patient unknowingly received out-of-network care, according to the report.

House Reps. Matt Baker (R) and Tina Pickett (R) introduced a bill that would make patients responsible for only in-network costs. Insurers and providers would resolve any cost disparities, according to the report.

Sens. Judy Schwank (D) and Don White (R) introduced the other bill targeting balance billing in Pennsylvania.

Both pieces of legislation are in committee and have yet to be voted on.
