Colorado bill would bolster regulations on medical debt collection

Proposed legislation in Colorado aims to protect patients from inappropriate collection practices, according to a report on ColoradoPolitics.com.

Here are three things to know.

1. A recent study of Consumer Financial Protection Bureau data shows consumers in Colorado file 7.2 medical debt collection complaints per 100,000 residents. The study makes Colorado part of the top 10 states with the most medical debt complaints.

2. The proposed legislation, Senate Bill 216, would help ensure debt collectors are not targeting consumers who have already taken care of their medical debt, according to the report.

3. Senate Bill 216 has multiple sponsors. Sponsors include Sen. Bob Gardner, R-Colorado Springs, Rep. Susan Lontine, D-Denver, and K.C. Becker, D-Boulder.
