Phoenix-based nonprofit system Banner Health reported a $228.8 million operating surplus for the nine months ended Sept. 30, up from the $196.1 million operating surplus it posted for the same period of 2013, according to unaudited third-quarter financial results.
Although the health system's operating surplus increased during the nine months ended Sept. 30, its total surplus of $242.4 million was down from the $542.7 million it posted for the same period of 2013.
Banner reported $4 billion in revenue in the nine months ended Sept. 30, up from $3.8 billion in the same period of last year. However, the system's expenses also grew to $3.8 billion, up from $3.6 billion for the corresponding quarter in 2013. Banner's expenses related to supplies grew to $639 million during the nine-month period, up from $596.4 million in the same period of last year.
