5 Medical Specialties With the Largest Compensation Raises From 2009-2012

Over the past four years, cardiologists in the cath lab have received the largest pay raises of any other medical group specialty, according to American Medical Group Association's 2013 compensation and financial survey, which analyzed 30 physician specialties.

Cath lab cardiologists recorded median compensation of $547,112 in 2012, an amount that is the highest of any specialty and 13 percent higher from $484,092 in 2009. Last year's survey showed that ophthalmologists had the highest compensation raises from 2008 through 2011 with an average of 14.3 percent.

Here are the five physician specialties with the largest increases in median compensation from 2009 to 2012, according to the AMGA's survey.

Hospitalist (internal medicine)

Compensation in 2009: $375,176
Compensation in 2012: $411,499
Percent change: 9.68 percent

Hematology/medical oncology
Compensation in 2009: $320,907
Compensation in 2012: $350,268
Percent change: 9.15 percent
