Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health and Santa Clara (Calif.) University plan to launch the Mark & Mary Stevens School of Medicine — the first new medical school in the San Francisco Bay Area in more than a century.
Four things to know:
1. The medical school is funded in part by a $175 million gift from Mark and Mary Stevens, according to a May 15 news release from the system. Sutter said the contribution is the largest gift ever to either organization.
2. The school’s future campus is an 82,000-square-foot facility under construction five miles from Santa Clara University’s campus and adjacent to the Sutter East Santa Clara Campus in Silicon Valley. Sutter also plans to open a 272-bed, eight-story medical center on its West Santa Clara Campus by 2031.
3. Sutter said the school will be embedded within its integrated health system and build on its graduate medical education programs. The system currently has more than 30 physician residency and fellowship programs and expects to train approximately 575 residents and fellows in 39 accredited graduate-level programs by the end of 2027.
4. The medical school will welcome its inaugural class after completing a multi-year accreditation process that is underway, the release said.
