New York City-based NYC Health + Hospitals/North Central Bronx and Lehman College have partnered to provide students with insight and experience in providing direct, nonclinical support to emergency department patients.
The monthslong ED Ambassador internship aims to encourage more students to pursue healthcare-related careers, according to an Oct. 7 news release from the health system.
Students “bridge the gap between medical staff and patients,” with responsibilities that include bringing blankets, water and snacks, as well as assisting with Wi-Fi access and patient portal navigation, the release said.
“Our goal is to improve care for our NCB patients while teaching Lehman students about how health care is organized and delivered,” Frederick Nagel, MD, chief of emergency services at NYC Health + Hospitals/North Central Bronx, said in the release. “At the end of their time as an Ambassador, many go on to shadow ED providers one-on-one to gain more insight into medical decision-making and a career in health care.”
