Delaware has partnered with Philadelphia-based Thomas Jefferson University to establish a regional campus of Sidney Kimmel Medical College, launching the first four-year medical school in the state’s history.
Five things to know:
1. Gov. Matt Meyer announced the initiative June 2. The Delaware Medical School Consortium will allow students to complete their entire medical education in Delaware while helping build a pipeline of physicians for communities across the state, according to a June 2 news release from the state.
2. Delaware is one of only three states without a Doctor of Medicine- or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine-granting institution. Under the new model, Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University will lead the consortium, which includes Delaware-based academic institutions and healthcare systems.
3. Preclinical instruction initially will be based in New Castle County, while clinical education and training will primarily occur within healthcare systems in Kent and Sussex counties.
4. The initiative is supported through CMS’ $50 billion Rural Health Transformation Program. Plans for the medical school were outlined in the state’s rural health transformation proposal in December, which described a primary care-rural health track within the school and the creation of “train here, stay here” programs with education awards for medical students and residents.
5. The project also is backed by a financial assistance award totaling more than $157 million, 100% funded by CMS, the release said.
