To determine data available about physicians in training, researchers examined GME Track, a resident database and tracking system.
Four findings:
1. Specialties with the largest number of first-year Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education residents and fellows in 2017 were internal medicine (9,825), family medicine/general practice (3,886) and pediatrics (2,854).
2. Less than half of the residents and fellows in Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited programs in 2017 were female (45.6 percent). Nearly 83 percent in obstetrics and gynecology residencies were female.
3. U.S. physicians with doctors of medicine represented 63.6 percent of residents and fellows in Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited programs in 2017. International medical graduates represented 23.8 percent, and physicians with doctors of osteopathic medicine represented 12.5 percent.
4. The number of first-year Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education residents and fellows grew the most in vascular and interventional radiology (37.1 percent); emergency medicine (26.4 percent); and neuroradiology (26.2 percent) between 2012 and 2017.
The largest decreases occurred in nephrology (15.1 percent), ophthalmology (14.7 percent) and geriatric medicine (14.3 percent).
