Northside Medical Center Nurses Begin Strike; Hospital Files Unfair Labor Charges

Northside Medical Center in Youngstown, Ohio, is filing unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board over the validity of the Ohio Nurses Association's 10-day notice of strike intention, according to a WKBN report.

The hospital says the union issued three confusing strike notifications with conflicting dates and times, thus violating a section of the National Labor Relations Act. The ONA told WKBN that the charges are "a blatant attempt to harass and intimidate nurses," and officials believe the hospital was properly notified of the strike plans, according to the report.

Meanwhile, the one-day strike began Tuesday. The nurses have been at odds with the hospital over contract negotiations, and the main issues involved patient care. About 400 nurses have been working without a contract for 14 months. The nurses are represented by the ONA and the Youngstown General Duty Nurses Association.

The hospital is using temporary replacement nurses to keep staffing levels consistent, and the strike is not expected to disrupt services, according to the report.
