Alpena Regional Medical Center nurses authorize strike: 4 things to know

Registered nurses at Alpena (Mich.) Regional Medical Center have voted to authorize sending a strike notice to the hospital, according to a report from The Alpena News.

Here are four things to know about the nurses, their negotiations with the hospital and the vote.

1. The nurses, represented by the Michigan Nurses Association, have worked without a contract since it expired in February. Since then, the nurses have rejected one proposal.

2. The nurses allege hospital administration has not been negotiating in good faith toward a new contract, and ultimately voted to authorize the strike, according to the report.

3. Hospital Vice President of Human Resources and Support Services Diane Shields told The Alpena News the hospital isn't going to debate the matter via the media. She added, "We don't bargain in the media and it is illegal for public employees to strike."

4. A strike has not been called, and the next date for negotiations has not been set.
