4 recent strikes, contract agreements and unionizations at hospitals

The following issues involving hospitals and unions were reported within the past month, beginning with the most recent.

1. Nurses begin strike at MedStar Washington Hospital

On Dec. 22, registered nurses at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. began a one-day strike.

2. RNs at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital ready to strike

Registered nurses at Salinas (Calif.) Valley Memorial Hospital voted to authorize a strike. Among other things, nurses have taken issue with the fact that the hospital's management no longer accepts Assignment Despite Objection forms, which are used in reporting unsafe patient care conditions.

3. Officials try to stop union's strike

A nurses union that planned a two-day strike in San Bernardino County, California received some push-back from county officials. However, more than 1,200 nurses employed by the county and represented by the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United went through with the strike.

4. Crozer-Chester Medical Center officials will prepare response to nurses' union complaints

The nurses' union with the National Labor Relations Board filed complaints against Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland, Pa.
