Demand for the ultrasound systems is driven by an increase in fetal imaging procedures, according to the report. The average number of ultrasounds per pregnancy has increased from 1.5 in the 1990s to 2.7 in 2006.

The report, “US Markets for Women’s Health Imaging Systems 2012”, discusses the market for breast imaging systems, breast imaging computer-aided detection software, obstetrics/gynecology ultrasound systems and bone densitometry systems in the United States.

“Despite the dominance of a few large players, there is still room for companies to enter this market, particularly with portable systems, where physicians have not yet established firm preferences,” said MRG Senior Analyst Isuru Silva. ”
