The company beat a deadline for Model 3 production that CEO Elon Musk set earlier this year. The 5,000th Model 3 finished quality checks around 5 am July 1 at Tesla’s Fremont Calif., factory.

Model 3 production has been plagued with delays due to an over-reliance on assembly line automation, battery problems and other issues, CNBC reported Tesla went so far as to erect a new assembly line in a tent outside of its main factory.

“I think we just became a real car company,” Mr. Musk emailed employees after reaching the production goal, according to CNBC.
