Shriners to Keep Hospitals Open

Delegates at the national Shriners convention have voted to keep all 22 hospitals in the Shriners system open and to reopen Shriners Hospital for Children in Galveston, Texas, which was closed after it was damaged by Hurricane Ike, according to a report in the Houston Chronicle.

The group’s leaders had proposed closing five hospital locations in May due to endowment losses. Delegates have now voted against the measure.

Delegates will vote on other proposals to save the financially-troubled system during the remaining days of the convention.
