5 Things Successful Hospitals Do to Retain Top Talent

You’ve found the talent, but how do you ensure valued employees stay?

Boost their job satisfaction, writes Amber Knabb in a blog post for Select International. Here are five specific steps to bolster employee satisfaction and retain talented employees.

1. Make employees feel like assets to the organization. Allow employees to feel secure in their job. Don’t make them feel like an overhead cost. Include their feedback in decisions or changes, and encourage them to set and reach goals.

2. Make hospital expectations and goals clear.
Provide detailed job descriptions so employees know just what their position entails. If those responsibilities change, communicate them directly to the employee. Top talent wants to meet expectations but can’t do so without knowing specifics.

3. Regularly exchange feedback and listen to their concerns. Offer feedback on employee performance but also set aside time for their concerns. This exchange should occur in a face-to-face meeting, which is also a time for management to inform employees of any internal changes at the hospital.

4. Ensure employees know there are opportunities for advancement. Give challenging and stimulating work. Provide tuition for continuing education classes. Learn where employees’ passions lie, and let them know what career development plans you have that match their interests.

5. Recognize and reward good work. Recognition of a job well done can foster the bond between employees and an organization. Praise should be specific and sincere. “Top talent is smart enough to know the difference between sincere appreciation and platitudes,” wrote Ms. Knabb.
