Sanford plans to hire a Lakota/Dakota healer and an Ojibwe healer as consultants and advisors for how the system can integrate Native American culture in its care. The healers will “act as advisers to healthcare workers to develop training and curriculum about the American Indian culture, and will consult with medical staff on when it may be appropriate to use traditional healing techniques in conjunction with modern medicine,” according to the report.
The plan to hire traditional Native American healers is part of an integrated medical home initiative for which Sanford Health received a three-year, $12 million grant from CMS in June, according to the report.
