Quincy Medical Center in Massachusetts to Reopen Maternity Ward

Quincy (Mass.) Medical Center and its parent organization, for-profit Steward Health Care in Boston, will spend $12.8 million to bring back its maternity ward, which was originally closed in Oct. 1998, according to a Patriot Ledger report.

The ward, which handled roughly 1,200 births per year during its peak, originally closed more than 13 years ago to save money. Now, Quincy Medical Center CEO Daniel Knell expects the 22,000-square-foot maternity suite to handle between 2,000 and 2,500 births in its first year, according to the report.

QMC’s maternity ward will open in the next nine to 11 months pending the approval of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
