Gulf Coast Medical Center sustained significant damage during Hurricane Katrina in 2005. HMA bought the hospital in 2006 and decided to officially shut down the hospital in 2008, citing cost of repairs and the migration of local residents, according to the report.

HMA hopes to have the proposed hospital built by June 2014.
