The goal is to create an outcome- and evidence-based decision support system to help oncologists analyze diagnostic and treatment options. MSKCC and IBM ultimately want Watson to be able to synthesize data from patients’ medical records, continuously updated treatment guidelines, published research and MSKCC clinicians’ experience to provide an individualized recommendation for each patient. The project is part of a larger trend of oncology moving to more personalized care for patients.
MSKCC and IBM plan to begin piloting the tools to a small group of oncologists at the end of this year, with wider distribution planned in late 2013.
