Granting a primary certificate for interventional radiology recognizes the discipline as a distinct area of medicine rather than an area of focus within a specialty, according to the release. ABR approved the new certificate to ensure physicians have the necessary skill set for interventional radiology.

“Support for the dual certificate in interventional radiology and diagnostic radiology by ABMS is a seminal event in the history of interventional radiology — and one that will benefit future patients by providing well-trained, minimally invasive, image-guided specialists,” said SIR President Marshall E. Hicks, MD, FSIR, in the release.

The certificate is the fourth primary certificate for ABR, adding to diagnostic radiology, radiation oncology and medical physics
