The money comes from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the stimulus bill.

Almost $10 million of the funding will go to create the Community Health Applied Research Network at the Kaiser Foundation Hospitals’ Center for Health Research in Portland, Ore. The center and four research nodes will evaluate patient-centered outcomes research among diverse populations and patient groups.

In addition, Columbia University will receive $3.5 million for research in the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network and the American Academy of Pediatrics will get $3.5 million to develop an electronic health record sub-network at a large pediatric primary care research system.
