Phil Knight, co-founder and chairman of Nike, and his wife Penny gave the gift to establish a center for translational research, clinical care, professional training and outreach in heart and vascular disease.
As a collaboration between researchers and clinicians, the institute will aim to develop new cardiovascular prevention, diagnostic and treatment strategies through research and apply them to patient care as quickly as possible. The institute will also build partnerships with pharmaceutical and medical device developers to reach patients through the commercial marketplace.
Heart surgeon Albert Starr, MD, and Sanjiv Kaul, MD, head of OHSU’s Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, (pictured above) will co-direct the institute.
