This includes patients covered by 27 new Medicare ACOs named Tuesday, as well as the 32 Pioneer Model ACOs that began December 2011 and the six Physician Group Practice Transition Demonstration organizations named January 2011.

The CMS shared savings programs introduced in the PPACA promise physicians and hospitals financial rewards for improving coordination and quality of care, while saving money. Physicians get reimbursed based on performance and how well they improve patient health, and CMS measures the quality of its Medicare ACO providers.
