The health plan notified patients it could drop Fairview Health Services from its network if the organizations fail to reach a contract agreement before their current contract expires Dec. 31. The policy change could impact nearly 170,000 patients in total.

But open enrollment for Medicare beneficiaries ends Wednesday, meaning those patients must decide whether to keep their Blue Cross Blue Shield plan without guaranteed access to Fairview Health Services physicians and facilities.

Blue Cross Blue Shield sells multiple Medicare health plans as well as Medicare supplemental insurance, according to the article.

Fairview Health Services is one of the state’s largest healthcare providers, comprised of six hospitals, 40 primary care clinics, 55 specialty clinics, 54 senior housing locations and 27 retail pharmacies.
