Virtual visits down at Kaiser Permanente

Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente furnished tens of millions of virtual visits and online prescription orders in 2023, though patients' use of those digital tools was down from previous years.

The health system delivered more than 22 million scheduled phone and video visits last year, according to its 2023 financial results. That was down from nearly 24.5 million virtual appointments in 2022 and 28.8 million in 2021.

Members also filled nearly 50 million online prescriptions through Kaiser Permanente's website or mobile app in 2023, up from 43 million the year prior though down slightly from 51 million in 2021. The health system also started offering text-based prescription refill alerts and mobile notifications to remind people when to take their medications.

In addition, more than 86,000 patients enrolled in remote care programs to manage chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.

"By fulfilling our mission, eliminating inefficiencies, and investing in technology, facilities and our communities, we are on a financially sustainable path," CFO Kathy Lancaster said in a Feb. 9 news release.
