The top 5 reasons N.Y. residents avoid telemedicine

Only 6 percent of upstate New York residents have used telemedicine, although 40 percent are aware of the practice, according to an Excellus BCBS report.

For the report, One Research conducted an online survey of 2,000 adults living in upstate New York. The survey included randomized questions on several health-related topics such as telemedicine.

Here are the top five reasons respondents report not using telemedicine.

  • A preference for in-person interaction: 50 percent
  • My physician does not offer telemedicine: 26 percent
  • My health plan does not offer telemedicine: 24 percent
  • A concern about privacy: 17 percent
  • A lack of necessary technology: 10 percent

For those who have used telemedicine, convenience (48 percent), cost of visit (34 percent) and availability outside of regular hours (31 percent) topped the list of motivating factors.
