California governor authorizes telepharmacy

Earlier this month, California Gov. Jerry Brown, a Democrat, signed into law AB 401, which authorizes telepharmacy health technology in the state.

The law will amend current regulations that mandate all prescription drugs be dispensed at licensed pharmacies, leaving some rural residents with limited access to their medications. The bill allows for "remote dispensing pharmacies" in areas where there are no pharmacies within 10 miles.

Mr. Brown also signed into law AB 40, which integrates the state's prescription drug monitoring program, called the Controlled Substance Utilization Review and Evaluation System database, with other health IT systems. The Department of Justice will be able to make the electronic history of controlled substances dispensed to an individual under a healthcare provider's care available to the provider no later than Oct. 1, 2018.
